LIONEL MESSI produced arguably the worst miss of his career last night as fans joked it ‘sums him up for Argentina’.

The Barcelona superstar has come in for more criticism during the Copa America as the national side continue to struggle.

After an opening game defeat to Colombia and a 1-1 draw with Paraguay – a game in which Messi scored a penalty – Argentina needed a win over Qatar in their final group game to progress.

After another poor performance, the Albiceleste managed to scrape their way into the last-eight with a 2-0 win.

Lautaro Martinez scored after just four minutes but Argentina still struggled for fluency, Sergio Aguero only sealing an unconvincing win with eight minutes left.

But it was Messi, who celebrates his birthday today, with a truly shocking strike that had fans talking on social media.

As a ball was rolled back to him, Messi found himself completely unmarked just by the penalty spot.

You would have bet your life on the Barca man, who turns 32 today, stroking home from that range – especially with the ball rolling into that magic left foot.

Messi completely misjudged the ball and while it took a little bobble, which definitely threw off his accuracy, even that wouldn’t usually matter to a player as good as Argentina’s No.10.

But fans were not as forgiving about the miss.

Some fans joked that Liverpool were the ones who had caused Messi’s drop off in form.

Thomas Lacey wrote: “His head has completely fell off since that defeat at Anfield” and John Prescott (not that one) added: “Poor lad, head’s gone!”

Player one added: “Sums him for Argentina.”

Zac scored a point for Cristiano Ronaldo: “I think the debate is over.”
