LIVERPOOL star Andy Robertson appears to have quit Twitter after a barrage of social media abuse following the Reds’ 2-0 defeat at Napoli.

The Scot gave away a controversial late penalty with the scores level when he was adjudged to have brought down Jose Callejon in the box.

Dries Mertens duly swept home the spot-kick, before former Tottenham striker Fernando Llorente got in front of Robertson to add a second in stoppage time.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp hit out at the decision to award the penalty after the match, but a section of trolls were quick to fire attacks on his left-baclk.

A search for Robertson’s Twitter handle ‘@andrewrobertso5’ previously just stated that tweets were not loading and now does not exist.

The defender is still active on Instagram at the time of writing and a check into his most recent post reveals the type of abuse he has been receiving.

One wrote: “Why don’t you ever learn? why are you so f****** wreckless?”

Another said: “Go back to Hull City you f****** trash footballer.”

A third said: “Andy b***** lose to Napoli 2-0 f****”, followed by a middle finger emoji.

However, after the news broke that Robertson was seemingly forced to step away from his social media, fans were soon on hand to offer words of support.

One user  tweeted: “Andy Robertson, arguably the best left-back in world football, having to deactivate his Twitter account because of the abuse he received after his first awful display in roughly 18 months is a rather sad view of modern-day football fans.

“Some people don’t deserve nice things.”

Another added: “Andy Robertson pls come back on Twitter son don’t let the glory fans bully you, we are true supporters win or lose.”

Teammate Mohamed Salah stunned fans by deleting his social media accounts earlier this year before later reactivating them.

Despite a first loss in FOUR months, Klopp was keen to take the focus off his players by insisting that the foul Robertson gave away shouldn’t have been penalised.
