City Phone traders want the president to intervene and order Police to release their merchandise that is currently impounded at the Central Police Station (CPS)Kampala.

Police together with other security organs two weeks ago raided shopping malls in downtown Kampala and arrested 250 people suspected of dealing with stolen motorcycles and mobile phones.

Over 1,600 mobile phones and 134 motorcycles suspected to have stolen were also recovered in an operation conducted in Cooper Complex, Muganzirwanza, and Mutasa Kafeero shopping centers.

Mobile phone traders at Mutasa Kafero building in down- Kampala, closed their shops on Tuesday protesting at the confiscation of their phones on 11th November.

According to the Police mouthpiece Fred Enanga, the operation was part of an exercise to combat crime in the city, targeted stolen phones and electronics.

According to Enanga, the security teams acted on intelligence to raid the exact shops with stolen items.

The police spokesperson explained that all the items recovered were clearly marked with the location and where they were recovered. “We are inviting people to come to Kampala Metropolitan Police headquarters, and crosscheck the electronic devices and phones recovered including laptops, cell phones, as well as tablets, computer monitors, TVs with supporting documents.

The city Traders later re-opened their shops on Friday. They wait for the police to release their merchandise that was confiscated during the security joint operation a month ago.

The City phone dealers Traders at Mutaasa Kafeero, say that their peaceful demonstration on Tuesday was a sign of their discontent to police refusal to release their merchandise.
