Police in Rubanda examining circumstances surrounding the death of a suspect in a police cell.
Erasmus Twinomujuni, a resident of Kacerere in Bufundi Sub County in Rubanda district was found dead in the police cells on Sunday morning.
Elly Maate, the Kigezi Region Police Spokesperson says Twinomujuni was locked up alone in the cells however,he started loudly banging doors of the police cells at about 3am on Sunday prompting police officers on duty to compose him. He was found dead around 8am on Sunday.
Maate says Twinomujuni was on December 4, 2019 put behind bars on allegations of assault and threatening violence.
It is alleged that Twinomujuni on several occasions battered Justine Zinkubire his mother and even threatened to slice her.
Maate, says police has already started inquires to establish the cause if his death.
Now the deceased’s brother, Jones Turinawe argues that the deceased was beaten into coma by police officers.
Together with his relatives ,Turinawe is questioning why his late brother was still under police custody beyond the mandatory 48 hours without making an appearance in court.
