President Yoweri Museveni has scoffed at those criticizing his move to bring in Cuban doctors to remedy the shortage experienced during the recent medics’ strike.

The government’s proposal to recruit at least 200 medical personnel from Cuba to work in public hospitals in rural areas drew criticism from Uganda Medical Association.

President Museveni during the Labour Day celebrations in Ssembabule explained: “They had tried to incite doctors to abandon patients so that they die.”

He said: “But fortunately, many of the doctors refused to leave patients and I congratulate them. It is only the few bad ones that boycotted patients and thought they would create a crisis for Uganda but they failed.”

The President went on: “Government workers must have discipline. On the issue of Cuban doctors that I keep hearing people talk about. Yes, I wanted to bring Cuban doctors because our own doctors behaved very badly and unprofessionally.”
