Gen. Elly Tumwine has told Parliament the situation in Arua before the arrest of Bobi Wine and others was ‘delicate’.
Gen. Tumwine, the security minister was summoned in Parliament to explain the security situation in the country and the brutal arrest of MPs in the West Nile city which has left Bobi Wine and Francis Zaake hospitalized.
The minister explained to Parliament: “The situation in Arua was already delicate even before the by-election was conducted following the killing of Col. Abiriga.”
Gen. Tumwine went on: “Some players in the Opposition opted to hold illegal processions, involving imported rowdy people who engaged in acts of hooliganism that disrupted campaigns of other candidates in Arua.”
The minister added: As political leaders and people’s representatives(MPs), we have to behave responsibly. The trend of exporting troublemakers like it has happened in Jinja, Rukungiri and Bugiri shall not be accepted.
He stated: “These same rowdy crowds threatened the electorate by words and actions, including physical assaults, destruction of property and rape because of their different political affiliations.”
Gen. Tumwine, however noted: “It is the duty of our security forces to defend the country, its sovereignty, and territorial integrity…the reckless trend has no place in our democracy and cannot be tolerated.”
