Kampala Police is investigating circumstances under which a housemaid in Kiwatule, a city suburb, allegedly killed her own one and a half year old child, last evening.
Miriam Attoo, detective inspector of police, Wandegeya police station, says doctors at Mulago hospital, who examined the body found out that Harriet Nakalema had slit the baby’s stomach; removing the intestines, kidney and also cut off the private parts, before taking the child to the hospital.
Attoo explains that the when Nakalema was asked to explain what had happened to the baby, she only said that the baby was rushed to hospital with diarrhoea.
Neighbours claim that they heard Nakalema praying for several hours, calling upon Pastor Bugingo and God. After three hours of prayer, she went suddenly went mute.
“She was calling upon Bugingo (pastor) in prayer to help sustain the child. I think this is because she prays from his church. At about 5:00am, they stopped and one of them took children to school” one of the neighbours said.
Luke Owoyesigire, Kampala Metropolitan police spokesperson confirms that Nakalema has since been arrested on charges of murder and is currently detained at Kiira road police station.
He says that Upon arrest Nakalema claimed that she doesn’t know how the child’s stomach was slit open.’
‘I believe it is Satan who slit my child’s stomach open, I cannot do it,” Nakalema said in tears.
When police revisited the alleged scene of crime, they discovered that Nakalema with another person still at large were working as house keepers at the residence of a woman only identified as Annet, who lives in Canada.
