President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni on Tuesday admitted that Uganda is suffering from rampant corruption but noted that the vice can be wiped out since the population is fed up of corrupt people .
While addressing the Anti-Corruption Dialogue conference at Imperial Royale, President Museveni stated that unless in a battle where one must either fight or die, politics is all about telling lies.
President Yoweri Museveni has blamed the current state of corruption in the country on the ineffectiveness of institutions that are mandated to fight corruption and graft in the country.
”The laws are there, the institutions are there, but the personnel manning those institutions are the problem now, but fortunately people are fed up so can no longer protect these corrupt people.”
He also said there’s need to amend the law that currently protects corrupt civil servants.
”The catchment area to replace these people is very big, the only problem now is the law protecting the corrupt civil servants, that law, this one here, this one here . We now have to be moved to have quicker methods of accountability that we have right now.” he said .
President Museveni also reiterated that renumeration is not the solution to corruption.
”Some of these area where there is a problem, people are well renumerated. URA, they get very good salaries, so, why would we have corrupt people there? Bank of Uganda, KCCA, but there is corruption there. So, renumeration is not the cure”the president noted.
“I am here to represent the freedom fighters. The country was suffering from many problems where corruption was a minor problem because there were bigger problems like extrajudicial killings among others,” the National Resistance Movement (NRM) Chairman said.
