Chelsea’s 1-1 draw at Eintracht Frankfurt on Thursday night not only put the London side in a strong position ahead of next week’s Europa League semi-final second leg.
The result also saw Chelsea set a Europa League record.
Chelsea are now unbeaten in their last 16 Europa League games — a record in the competition since it was rebranded in 2009-10.
The Blues have had a fairly comfortable run to the semi-finals this season — seeing off PAOK Salonika, MOL Vidi and BATE Borisov in the group phase, before knocking out Malmo, Dynamo Kiev and Slavia Prague.
But their run of 16 games unbeaten also includes their victory over Portuguese giants Benfica in the 2013 final.
Chelsea’s last defeat in the Europa League came en route to their triumph in 2013 when they lost 3-2 to Rubin Kazan in Russia, but prevailed 5-4 on aggregate having won the first leg of their quarter-final 3-1 at Stamford Bridge.
A defeat appeared to be on the cards on Thursday when Luka Jovic shot Frankfurt into the lead midway through the first half.
But Pedro levelled for Maurizio Sarri’s side on the stroke of half time.
