Five people are in custody at Katwe Police Division in connection to opium distribution and defrauding unsuspecting members of the public.

The suspects are Massa Luwedde, Zaifa Ssekyewa, Esther Namwanjje, John Kaweesi and Eria Lusiba. They were picked up from Salaama Road in Makindye-Sabagabo Division in Kampala on Wednesday night in a joint security operation by the army, Police and Local Defence Unit personnel.

The Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson, Patrick Onyango confirmed the operation and arrest of the suspects.

He explained that the suspects have tentatively been charged with opium distribution but will be slapped with more charges as investigations continue.

According to police, the suspects have been calling their victims asking them to send money under the guise that they won prizes, received packages from their relatives or friends abroad while in some instances they claim they need to be picked at the airport.

The operation came a day after Kawempe Police arrested a suspected serial land fraudster. The suspect only identified as Moses, together with four others have allegedly been defrauding millions of Shillings from unsuspecting members of the public in fake land deals.

On Wednesday, Onyango said Moses was apprehended after a woman identified as Margret Nanyanzi accused him of conning her of Shillings 50 million in a bogus land deal.
