Are you one of those who have been enjoying the free UBC channel on your pay tv platform? Well, it is so sad that you may have to devise other means pprobably even for tonight’s 8pm showdown between Zimbabwe and Uganda Cranes.
News reaching our desk indicate that; After broadcasting the 2019 African Cup of Nations games for just three days, the ‘broke’ National Broadcaster, Uganda Broadcasting Corporation (UBC) is already negotiating with the Confederations of African Football (CAF) to broadcast the remaining games on credit.
Reliable sources say UBC began a live relay of the AFCON feeds valued at over Shs1bn, but they thought that the government would respect the orders by the Speaker of Parliament, Rebecca Kadaga to release funds for broadcasting rights.
African Union of Broadcasting (AUB), which had given UBC an offer of 350,000 Euros (Shs1.5bn) became impatient and cut the feed when no payments were made yet UBC was available for free on several Pay TV platforms.
UBC Managing Director, Winston Agaba says if the negotiation yields positive results, they hope to pay the remaining balance when government releases the money.
“They wanted us to pay upfront, which we couldn’t do because Government can only release money in the first quarter of next financial year,” UBC Managing Director, Winston Agaba said.
