Kira Division police have launched a hunt for a taxi driver who allegedly knocked a person dead and injuring two others at the Bukoto flyover in Kampala on Tuesday.

The taxi registration number UAB 585X swerved off the road while trying to avoid a  head-on collision with another vehicle which was approaching from the opposite direction. In the process, the vehicle rammed into two motorcyclists, killing one instantly.

Kampala Metropolitan Police deputy Spokesperson ,Luke Owoyesigire, has identified the deceased as Charles Tusiime while the two people who survived injuries include Salma Kemigisha, 19, a resident of Namuli zone, Bukoto Parish and Muhammad Bbaale, a resident of Nsangi, Wakiso District.

Bbaale and Kemigisha were rushed to Mulago hospital in critical condition with the help of nearby people while Tusiime’s body was taken to Kampala Capital City Authority –KCCA mortuary for postmortem.

Police said a hunt for the driver of the taxi has been intensified and he will face among other charges careless driving.

Traffic and road safety records of last year indicate 3,194 people died in road accidents translating to 10 dying every day as a result of carnage. The number of people who sustained serious injuries reduced to 6,085 from 6,530 recorded in 2017.

Director traffic and road safety –Assistant Inspector General of Police –AIGP Steven Kasiima, said crashes increased by 4.7 per cent, serious crashes reduced by 6.8 per cent. However, the number of minor crashes decreased to 3,526 in 2018 from 3,663 in 2017.
