Ugandans will soon have to suspend their bonking sessions following a decree by the National Drug Authority (NDA) to Marie Stopes Uganda to recall about 4 million Life Guard condoms from the Ugandan market.

Marie Stopes is an NGO that offers reproductive services is also the sole distributor of Life Guard condoms in Uganda.

It is estimated that over 4 million condoms produced in the batches will be affected.

According to a letter issued by the NDA, Life Guard condoms from batches 19040205 and 19050105 manufactured in April and May 2019 with expiry dates for March and April 2024 do not meet market standards.

Victoria Nambasa, the product safety officer at NDA says the condoms were not free from holes and burst properties.

On the open market, a packet of Lifeguard condoms costs between Shs 1,500 and Shs 2,000.

Dr. Carole Sekimpi, Country Director at Marie Stopes, said in a statement that While the Life Guard brand follows strict quality controls, unfortunately, two recent batches have fallen short from the quality  demanded

According to data from Uganda’s ministry of health, an estimated 800 million condoms are needed to protect Ugandans from unplanned pregnancies, HIV/Aids and other sexually transmitted diseases.
