The chairman of Wandegeya Market Jonathan Ggita has refused to hand over management of the market to a five-member team appointed by Kampala Capital City Authority-KCCA.

The team from the Directorate of Gender and from the revenue collection was appointed on 15th November to start work on Monday, until KCCA conducts elections.

Ggita and his committee members were appointed to the leadership by former KCCA Executive Director Jenifer Musisi. According to Ggita, their understanding with KCCA was that they lead the market vendors until an election is conducted.

Quoting a letter dated 22nd November, Ggita says that more than 400 vendors resolved in a meeting that he continues leading them until they elect a substantive committee.

The chairman maintains that the people he represents asked him to keep managing the market.

On Monday, a section of vendors in support of Ggita put up writings on the wall declaring their support for him.

The decision to suspend the Ggita committee and appoint a KCCA team was agreed by KCCA council following multiple petitions to the office of the Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago against the leadership of Ggita.

A section of vendors have accused Ggita of denying some applicants working space, overstaying and threatening to arrest his opponents.

The most recent petition was filed to the office of the Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago on 15th September by Mutesasira Mawejje and Mai Nabukenya
