Bank of Uganda has placed a ban on all banknotes that have been written on anyhow.
The institution warns that writing or defacing a country’s banknotes is illegal. It not only distorts security features but also shortens the lifespan of the currencies.
Bank of Uganda urged members of the public to only acknowledge notes with features designed by it and not any other person or institution.
This implies that Ugandans in possession of such money will lose it. It also warns people against using it in business transactions.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the BoU Governor, Emmanuel Mutebile said: “The public is advised to accept only those notes that bear features as designed by Bank of Uganda.”
He added that “individuals involved with defacing and/or those accepting defaced notes risk losing value of their banknotes.”
On Friday, there was a display on social media of banknotes of different denominations written on with political messages “vote Bobi Wine 2021” and “Vote Museveni 2021.”
