Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA ) is in its final stages of installing street lights in the outskirts of the city.
So far 4,988 street lights are in the City with 1560 being Solar, courtesy of KCCA, although these street lights don’t reach slum areas.
Harriet Mulondo, the Director Gender and Community Development KCCA, says a feasibility study with French Development Agency (AFD) on Kampala slums is underway on how to proceed with the Kampala Street Lighting.
Mulondo notes that when the study concludes ,they will seek funding from the French government to light-up areas in Kampala that have been identified as dark spots used by criminals to commit crime.
She says the Master Plan once complete will go a long way infighting crime as well.
Reports from various divisions also indicate that apart from poor lighting, dark spots have become refuge for criminal activities as a result of drug abuse and alcoholism dominating.
Sarah Kanyike, the Deputy KCCA Lord Mayor urged division leaders and local councils to draft bi-laws to manage issues in their areas like alcoholism, operation of bars and gender based violence among others that affect their communities.
