Seven Rwandan Nationals, who had been charged with illegal possession of firearms have been set free by the General Court Martial in Kampala.

The seven suspects are Rene Rutagungira, Bahati Mugenga, Emmanuel Rwamuco, Augustine Rutisiri, Etienne Nsanzabahizi, Charles Byaruhanga, and Claude Iyakaleme

The court presided over by Lt General Andrew Gutti endorsed the withdrawal of the charges of unlawful possession of firearms, ammunition and military uniforms against them.

Prosecution led by Lt Col Raphael Mugisha tendered before the court a document indicating that they had lost interest in the case hence the withdrawal of the charges.

He, however, pointed out that the withdrawal charges can be reinstated at any time.

One of the nationals Rene Rutagungira was first arraigned in court in 2017  on charges of abduction although these accusations were later amended.

The prosecution alleged that Rene used a pistol and grenades to abduct Lt Joel Mutabazi and Jackson Kalemera, both former Bodyguards to the Rwandan President Paul Kagame.

The charge sheet also indicates that Rene alongside some Ugandan Police officers in a cunning move transferred the abductees to Rwanda.

The release of the suspects comes at a time when tensions between Uganda and Rwanda are seemingly shrinking.

In early 2019, Rwanda closed its Gatuna and Chanika Borders and issued a Travel Advisory warning its citizens against traveling to Uganda.

Kagame has also accused Uganda of harboring rebels who want to destabilize the Kigali Government.
