The State Minister for Animal Industry, Lt Col (Rtd) Bright Rwamirama, has declared a 14-day quarantine on livestock in Sembabule district to restrain foot and Mouth Disease-FMD.
Col Rwamirama made the declaration during a meeting between livestock farmers and district leaders at Sembabule District Council Hall on Thursday, January 16.
He noted that this 14 day ban will give room for the ministry to vaccinate cattle aganist foot and mouth disease virus.
Last week on Friday, Lwemiyaga County Member of Parliament Theodore Ssekikubo merged with livestock farmers in an attempt to reopen a livestock market in protest of a ban on the sale and movement of livestock.
They accused police of siding with particular individuals mainly bigshots to enforce the quarantine which was affecting the local people.
However police swung into action,frustrated the protest and arrested the legislator on the charge of inciting violence.
Col Rwamirama also said that Ministry will soon introduce rough punishments on those found taking part in acts that bolster the spread of Foot and Mouth Disease in any parts of the country.
Recently ,livestock farmers and residents of Lwemiyaga County led by Ssekikubo petioned the speaker of parliament right hon Rebecca Kadaga to investigate the security minister Gen Elly Tumwine for illegally blocking the market.
