There was panic on Monday morning at Mbale High court when an inmate who had been on remand for six months collapsed and died in court cells.

The deceased Simon Mayuya, a resident and a truck driver at Mutimba village in Buyobo Sub County, Sironko district was jailed at Maluku prisons on the accusation of murdering his cousin who also doubles as his boss.

The Son, Tom Wetaka, narrated the ordeal saying his father slid and fell backward hitting his head hard on the chair where one of the prison officers was seated.

The deceased’s lawyer, David Moli, says his client was unwell and had a spinal fracture as a result of an accident he was involved in prior to his arrest and imprisonment.

He says he was in the process of applying for bail when the unfortunate incident occurred.

Efforts to get a comment from the Uganda Prisons Service Spokesperson, Frank Baine were futile as he could neither pick nor return repeated calls.
