Police at CPS Kampala has arrested one Sarah Koburungi, a businesswoman in Kawaala, on charges of the alleged murder of her housemaid.
This comes after the disappearance of and subsequent death of her 15-year-old maid, Ashante Arinaitwe whose decomposing body was found in a bush at Kasuubi Kawala by area residents who alerted the police.
Arinaitwe went missing on the 1st of February 2020 after she was reportedly sent to buy food from Kasubi Market. Her body was yesterday found decomposing in a bush by residents that mounted a second search.
Patrick Onyango, the Kampala Metropolitan police spokesperson, said Koburungi alerted police on the day of her disappearance and immediately a hunt for the victim’s whereabouts was launched.
He explains that Kawaala police received a call from local authorities notifying them of the teenager’s lifeless body lying in a bush.
Police dispatched Scene of Crime Officers –SOCOs who examined the body at the scene and later came to the conclusion that the girl could have died a week earlier.
This led to the arrest of her boss Koburungi to reconcile the facts surrounding her death.
Reuben Ssebyayi, the Kawaala zone chairman, said Koburungi went to the village and brought Arinaitwe to work as her maid a few months ago. Ssebyayi said they knew the victim but she was too young.
Ssebyayi explained that Koburungi introduced Arinaitwe as a daughter to her uncle. On a fateful day, Koburungi alerted the village council and she was advised to report a case of disappearance.
One of the residents who declined to be named said the girl was being sent to buy food at late hours of the night.
Although Ssebyayi and other locals blamed Koburungi of being negligent by sending her in wee hours to the market, they disagree with the allegations that she died a week ago.
The deceased’s body has been rushed to city Mortuary for a postmortem.
