Former presidential candidate Maj Benon Biraaro has been pronounced dead on Wednesday afternoon at Kampala Hospital.

Maj Biraaro succumbed to a long battle with colon cancer. He contested for president as Flag Bearer for the Farmers Party in 2016.

Maj Biraaro was born on 1 March 1958 in Isingiro District,

Biraaro graduated from Makerere University in 1982 with a Bachelor of Arts in political science after which he joined the National Resistance Army-NRA Bush War on 7 June 1982.

He later went to Cranfield University in the United Kingdom, graduating with a Masters in Global Strategic Studies

He previously served as the commandant of the Uganda Senior Command and Staff College in Kimaka, Jinja, as the deputy commandant of the National Leadership Institute, Kyankwanzi, and as the commander of the military police.

Gen Biraro always faulted President Museveni and his NRM party for not doing enough to alleviate poverty.
