The Electoral Commission has announced that it will on Wednesday 19th Feb 2020 commence the display of the National Voters Register ahead of the 2020-2021 general elections.
Justice Simon Byabakama, the EC Chairperson, while speaking to the media on Monday said the display of the Voters’ Register will take place every day of the week between 8:00 am and 6:00 pm beginning on Wednesday, February 19 up to March 10, 2020.
Byabakama notes that this display will take place at all the 34,344 polling stations in 135 districts countrywide.
He explained that the purpose of this display exercise is to make known to the display Officer, whether a voter appears on the register, who has died, who is under 18 years of age, who else resides or originates from a parish beside the registered and who appears more than once on the Voters’ Register.
This display exercise also serves to update voters on the correctness of their particulars including photographs and to raise objections to the inclusion and removal of a voter’s particulars from the Register.
He, however, stressed that persons who have applied and changed their particulars on the National Identification Register, including names or dates of birth, will be required to inform the Electoral Commission in writing.
The EC boss has also indicated that this display exercise will not handle persons that seek to do a fresh voter application for registration or transfer to another voting location.
According to Justice Byabakama, this exercise also lists all persons recommended for deletion from the National Voters’ Register and this will be displayed for a period of ten (10) days, from 11th to 20th March 2020 at the respective Parishes/Ward Headquarters.
He said the display of the Voters’ Registers for youth, Persons with Disability (PWD) and older persons will also commence on Wednesday, February 19 and end on February 28.
Currently, Uganda has 17,782,594 as the number of Registered Voters in 296 Constituencies.
