Irate locals have lynched a suspected criminal gang leader who has been on police warrant for terrorizing and robbing residents for a while.
David Ssemambo aka Mambo, known to be the most wanted gang leader in Wobulenzi town council in Luweero district was arrested on Wednesday morning but attempted to escape forcing angry residents to stone him to death.
The criminal gang has had many in fear for their lives and property since last year.
He was nabbed alongside his gangsters including Dalton Muyomba, Charles Ssettoke, Farouk Kigozi Ashraf and Alex Ssebunya. The gang was reportedly caught with machetes that they have been using to attack and rob residents.
According to Abraham Tukundane, the Luweero District Police Commander, the gang of 5 had plotted to rob a local hardware shop in Wobulenzi on Tuesday night but information leaked to police hence their arrest at about 7 am at Wobulenzi Police Station.
Residents also stormed the Police station demanding that police hands over the remaining four suspects unsuccessfully.
Tukundane explains when Ssemambo attempted to flee angry residents surrounded him and stoned him to death. He was later rushed to Luweero Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Tukundane, who describes Ssemambo as a notorious gang, says his murder is a signal to the end of the gang.
