The Kampala City Lord Mayor, Erias Lukwago has urged parliament to reject the government’s proposal to borrow Shillings 600 billion from Exim Bank of India to finance the Tondeka Metro Bus Project.

The government has committed to the above sum through Uganda Development Corporation (UDC) for the Tondeka Bus Service.

While appearing before the Parliamentary Committee on Tourism, Trade, and Industry to present his views on the proposed bus service, the outspoken City Lord Mayor explained that the loan request is more than double the KCCA budget and over-inflated.

A grouch Lukwago also wondered why KCCA has been sidelined in the project to the extent that he is not aware of who is in charge of the project since his office has not received any official communication in that regard.

The proposed public transportation in the Kampala Metropolitan area is expected to start off on September 1st, 2020 in collaboration with the transport and works ministry and the Uganda Development Corporation (UDC) together with other partners as part of a public-private partnership.

However, Albert Muganga, a director of Pioneer Easy Bus, said that the government should work towards fulfilling its contractual terms such as having priority lanes for the buses, instead of injecting more money into the Tondeka Bus Service.
