In light of the looming Covid 19, the Electoral Commission has canceled all general elections of Special Interest Groups-SIGs as earlier scheduled for April 2020.

Nominations of the village SIGs that include OP, PWD, and Youth were scheduled to start on the 8th to April 13th, 2020 while campaigns were supposed to take place on the 15th,17th and 20th of April 2020 respectively.

Justice Simon Byabakama the EC chairperson made the pronouncement while appearing before the public accounts committee of parliament to explain the argument by MPs on the reopening of the voters register for eligible voters who will have turned 18 years in 2021 when the general elections take effect.

Byabakama emphasized that they had scheduled that the first batch of the Special Interest groups happen in April but due to the ban on mass gatherings which pose a threat to the population and in line with the recent directive by the president, they will postpone it.

Byabakama said they will go back to the drawing board and make necessary adjustments in the roadmap then inform the public of their decision, hoping that the COVID-19 would be under control by then.
