Governor Bank of Uganda-BOU Emmanuel Mutebile has been hospitalized in a Ugandan medical facility and is not expected to perform his official duties soon.
This was revealed in a confirmatory tweeted statement by the Bank of Uganda on Tuesday night stating that Governor Emmanuel Mutebile is on the sickbed, but responding well to treatment.
This followed rumors doing rounds on social media the BOU governor was hanging onto life by a loose thread after being hospitalized a week ago.
In the statement on the bank’s Twitter handle addressed by Charity Mugumya, the BOU Director of Communications.
The statement reads that the governor was unwell, but “his doctors attended to him he is responding very well to treatment.
Dr. Adam Mugume also tweeted that On Wed Mar 25, 2020, Prof. Mutebile Bank of Uganda Governor took a sick leave.
‘He is receiving treatment in a Ugandan medical facility and will resume duty as soon as he has recuperated. Strongly disregard the false and malicious stories of his passing.” she added
His poor health condition prompted the BoU Board of Directors to appoint Dr. Adam Mugume, the current BoU Director of Research, as the acting Deputy Governor last Friday so that there was a substantial person to make decisions and avoid leaving a leadership vacuum.
On Sunday, March 29, President Museveni appointed Dr. Michael Atingi-Ego the new deputy governor of Bank of Uganda, replacing Dr. Louis Kasekende whose contract ran out in January this year.
The President announced the appointment on his social media pages on Sunday, March 29, and asked parliament to vet the appointee.
