A section of the public has expressed disappointment with the president’s directive to halt all politicians from distributing food to the needy in parts of Kampala.

Some of these people that interacted with this website from areas of Kamwokya, Kisenyi, Bwaise, and Nateete claim the government is slow in offering them the aid they require yet they have not worked for a long time now and are starving.

Kampala Central Mp Muhammed Nsereko was recently arrested while attempting to distribute a truck filled with kilograms of Maize flour and bananas to his electorate who had desperately gathered in large numbers in form of aid in trying times.

Nakaseke South Legislator Lutamaguzi Semakula also donated food to residents and water tanks to taxi operators in his area.

President Yoweri Museveni on Tuesday lashed out at politicians donating foodstuffs and other items that they will be arrested and charged with attempted murder.

The president described the politicians as ‘idiots’ and ‘enemies’ of the nation.

While addressing the nation yesterday to clarify the additional measures issued by his office on Monday in a bid to contain the spread of COVID -19, the president said the’ shameless opportunists’ who are ‘greedy’ are seeking cheap popularity and power.

The president noted that the power-hungry politicians gather large crowds of people in the name of distributing food which directly causes a high risk of infection of the novel COVID-19.

He said it is not allowed and police will intercept all involved for trying to kill Ugandans.

He advised the politicians to instead donate their money institutionally through the national taskforce that way he said they will earn their popularity.

The taskforce committee is headed by the Prime Minister, Dr. Ruhakana Rugunda and the health minister, Dr Jane Ruth Aceng.

The president, however, hasn’t stated when the distribution of food items will commence and how but he clarified that the task force team will identify vulnerable groups in the villages who survive from hand to mouth but have been constrained by the lockdown to offer this aid

Among the standard guidelines given by the World Health Organization -WHO is social distancing where people are expected to keep a space of 4 meters from each other and also avoid areas where more than 10 people are gathered.

In most parts of the world, a national lockdown has been effected with a general campaign for people to stay home.
