The Ministry of Health has announced that it will turn the Mandela National Stadium (Namboole) into a health facility should the number of COVID-19 cases increases.
While updating the nation on the COVID -19 pandemic on Thursday afternoon, the Minister of Health Dr.Ruth Acheng said Uganda will have 18,877 cases at a rate of 3 percent rate of fatality by April of the COVID -19 if the current lockdown is not adhered to
She said this is unbearable for the health system to manage.
”This is what it would have looked like, 18,878 cases would have been confirmed at a 3% fatality rate, 566 people would be dead by April 31st 2020. Something had to be done immediately”
”The purpose of the lockdown is to suppress the spread of COVID-19. This measure breaks the chain of transmission. Other countries have done this and managed the spread of the virus” Achieng said
Diana Atwine, the Health Ministry Permanent Secretary while appearing before the parliamentary committee on the budget this Wednesday indicated to the committee that once the two facilities Entebbe Grade B and Mulago are filled up they are making arrangements for Namboole.
The Ministry of health was being grilled over a supplementary request of 284 billion shillings to mitigate the effects of the coronavirus.
Uganda has so far registered 44 cases of COVID-19 from over 500 tests conducted.
