Manchester City have announced the death of Pep Guardiola’s mother, Dolors Sala Carrio, after she contracted coronavirus aged 82.

Spain has the Pandemic’s second-highest death toll in the world and City confirmed their manager’s mother passed away in Barcelona on Monday.

Guardiola recently donated one million euros to help the fight against the Pandemic in his native Spain, where he achieved great success as Barcelona manager.

More than 13,000 people have died in Spain as a result of Pandemic, second only to Italy, while the nation has over 135,000 confirmed cases, second to the United States.

However, the number of deaths is beginning to fall each day following Thursday’s peak of 950.

After yesterday’s fall, the country’s Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said: “We are starting to see the light at the end if the tunnel.”

When Barcelona wanted to sign Pep as a promising young player, Dolors, along with her husband, Valenti, refused the offer before accepting the club’s second attempt.

Guardiola went on to have a glittering playing and managerial career. He captained the club and was a key member of Barcelona’s inaugural European winning side in 1992 before managing the club to two more wins in the competition, securing a treble in 2008-09, his first season in charge.
