Bobi Wine drove a truck full of food, soap and sanitizers among other requirements to the national task force to help vulnerable population.

Bobi, real name Robert Kyagulanyi donated cash, truck of mattresses, spray pumps, gas cylinders and gloves.

The Kyadondo East legislator also carried; soap, face masks, hand sanitizers, pharmaceutical drugs, testing kits, mosquito nets, food and drinking water.

President Yoweri Museveni hailed his contribution and asked the others to borrow a leaf.

National Resistance Movement NRM, followed by writing a cheque of 380M shillings. Party deputy chairperson Al Hajji Moses Kigongo delivered the cheque to the national task team.

Democratic Party DP, Forum for Democratic Change FDC and Alliance for National Transformation and among others have remained silent.

Corona virus task force composes of a handful of politicians and technocrats. They are led by Mary Karoro Okurut, Prime Minister Ruhakana Rugunda, Ian Clarke, Keith Muhakanizi, Dr. Francis Omaswa, Dr. Diana Atwine, Robert Kabushenga. Patrick Mweheire and Bwoch Gustavas.

Others are Aga Sekalala, Bishop Joshua Lwere, Francis Kamulegeya, Apollo Makubuya and Kishor Jobanputra.

Parties certainly have their issues especially the composition of the task force which has minister Karoro who is an NRM member as the leader. May be they would have expected a politician from the opposition to balance the equation.

As it is, it is out of their control. But then do they simply throw up? With or without corona virus, elections have to take place. How can they tap in to the current situation to stay relevant among their supporters? The bigger set of the population that has been displaced by the Covid-19 lock down is in the urban areas. Wakiso, Kampala and Mukono is a huge base for the opposition.

They are a group that live off what they earn in a day. Many of them are back in their rooms. The entire lock down with the 3 weeks added, make it a month and a week. This a population that work down town in St Balikudembe, Kisekka Market, Container Village and Shopping malls.

The opposition will humble themselves and say they were not accommodated but then have they made an effort? Many of the Members of Parliament irrespective of their parties have set up groups in their constituencies to see how to give a hand.

But the city is a known opposition household and how will they convince themselves that they shared the little they had during the Covid-19 times? Muhammad Nsereko, Kampala Central MP had his days with security when he tried to distribute masks and sanitizers among other things. Nsereko will not be forgotten.

Ibrahim Ssemujju, Kira Municipality has been battling it out his people at the constituency. Francis Zaake who belongs to Bobi Wine’s People Power camp has been active in Mityana where he found himself on the wrong side of the day and is in jail. Ssemujju also talked about Betty Nambooze retiring to her constituency in Mukono Municipality to feed people.

Parties can not ignore the exercise  completely. From the health point of view and the way Covid-19 is being handled well by Dr. Ruth Jane and Aceng and Dr. Diana Atwine, opposition must find their footing as they look beyond this pandemic. The pandemic will speak volumes at campaign time. They face a backlash from the masses when campaigns come up sometime later this year. Bobi Wine’s contribution will not spare anybody in the opposition.

The population wants something to eat and they will care where it is coming from. But the ones who contribute will certainly not be forgotten. If it is the only way is through the national task force then it is the way to go. We have seen in the US, President Donald Trump and Speaker Nancy Pelosi do not share from the same plate. But, when it comes to saving the lives of the population, they will seat on the round table.

Dr. Kizza Besigye has been active on social media agitating for workers to have a share of their NSSF savings. However, he can sit down with his party members and organise something through the task force for their supporters.

Nobert Mao, Patrick Oboi Amuriat, Major Gen. Mugisha Muntu and Asuman Basalirwa know that ‘Blessed is the hand that gives because it will receive abundantly’.
