The government has resolved to give all perishable donated relief food items to health workers who are at the forefront of battling COVID-19.
Speaking at the Uganda Media Center UMC, on Tuesday Musa Ecweru the disaster and preparedness minister said they have we have already disscussed with medical superintendents at different hospitals so that they can receive these perishables on behalf of their staff.
”for perishable we are going to send them to the medical staff and orphanages we don’t want to keep them in our stores you are kind enough to bring us eggs and matooke we shall accept it but we will not keep it for long”. Ecweru said
This follows an appeal to the government on 12th April by the health workers through their umbrella body of the Uganda Medical Workers Union- UMWU for relief aid , Personal protective gear, and allowances to workers who are at the forefront of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Through their general secretary Aggrey Sanya they argued that health workers are among the least paid in the civil service and right now are deeply engaged in tackling COVID-19 and can’t steal time to do other activities for their livelihood.
