833 prisoners will happily go back to the comfort of their homes very soon after the President appended his signature of pardon to their names.

Prisons spokesperson Frank Baine on Monday revealed that the President of Uganda through the exercise of his powers has under article 121 of the 1995 constitution of Uganda freed the lamp some of the people under his prerogative of mercy powers.

Addressing journalists at Uganda Media Center Baine confirmed the development but declined to give any other details attaining the pardoned prisoners.

His only answer was that they will come in later.

These details would also indicate who the freed inmates are and guidelines on how they will be sent home during this lockdown season.

On the 6th of April 2020 , the Commissioner-General of Uganda Prisons Dr. Johnson Byabashaija said the government was considering decongesting the prisons by pardoning over 2,000 inmates as an effort to slow the spread of COVID -19.

He indicated that inmates who are on light sentences and those who have covered the third quarter of their sentences, breastfeeding mothers and those 65 years above were being considered for a pardon.

Baine while confirming the word of his senior said they had forwarded a list of about 1500 names to the Attorney general for consideration.

He said once complete the names would then be taken to the president for a pardon.
