The hearing of the case involving the controversial Mityana Mp Francis Zaake has started at the Nakawa Magistrates court presided over by the chief magistrate Ruth Nabasa.

Zaake who is admitted currently at a Mityana has been produced before the Mityana magistrates court in a critical state.

The frail legislator was carried to court on a hospital bed before being placed on a bench at the court.

He is charged with doing an act likely to cause the spread of infectious disease.

Zaake was arrested on Sunday evening in Mityana district for allegedly defying presidential directives on the distribution of food to his constituents in Mityana.

Museveni called on all well-wishers to deliver food relief to the National COVID-19 Taskforce, to avoid exposing people to circumstances that could lead to the spread of the disease.

People Power spokesperson Joel Ssenyonyi said Zaake’s health started deteriorating on Wednesday after he collapsed at the Special Investigations Unit.

He was rushed to Naguru Hospital and later Nsambya hospital.

Ssenyonyi argues that unlike Zaake, several Members of the ruling party leaders like Hanifa Kawooya, Haruna Kasolo Kyotera MP, minister Rosemary Sseninde are freely distributing food without being arrested.

Zaake who is represented by his lawyers Eron Kiiza and Asuman Basalirwa has applied for his unconditional release.

They told the court that their client has been under detention without charge since his arrest on April 19th, 2020.

The matter to be heard at Nakawa Magistrates court is an Application demanding for Zaake’s unconditional release.

Ruth Nabasa is expected to deliver her ruling on the matter by 2 pm on Monday.
