Residents of Bukasa Bweyogerere, Wakiso district on Thursday morning woke up to the shocking news of a dead body resident who drowned while swimming on the shores of Lake Victoria.
The deceased identified as Opoya Peter 23 years, a brickmaker, met his ill fate after he decided together with his two colleagues to go for a bath at the lake after a long day of making bricks.
One of his colleagues who spoke on condition of anonymity says they went to the shores at about 5:30 pm and the deceased insisted on going for a swim at the deeper end despite being warned that he couldn’t manage.
He says even after multiple warnings, the deceased remained adamant and decided to go into deeper waters.
He narrates that when Opoya swam to the deep end he never came back prompting panic from his colleagues who run to the uncle who also happens to be his boss what had happened.
An eye witness identified as Mathew Okoth says the three friends went to bathe at the shore but along the way Opoya told his friends that he wanted to swim for a while, he says after the deceased went 5 meters into the lake, he drowned and failed to come out,
Okoth says his Uncle showed up after being informed and sounded an alarm attracting locals who tried in vain to retrieve the body of the deceased.
The Bukasa area chairman Kaddu John says they informed Bukasa police of the unfortunate incident and they arrived at the scene by 7 pm but still failed to get the body out since it was dark.
Kaddu says the police promised to contact marine police to help out but by the time of filing this story they hadn’t shown up yet.
