Speaker Rebecca Kadaga wants to take on the case of alleged beating of legislators Francis Zaake and Kato Lubwama.

Legislators Zaake, Mityana Municipality and Lubaga South Kato are nursing severe injuries from alleged beatings by security during the lock down.

Zaake was arrested on April 19 while distributing rice and sugar to selected households in Buswabulongo and Kiwawu villages in Mityana.

National Police Spokesman Fred Enanga said they arrested him for defying the guidelines of the Covid-19 National Task Force tasked with the duty to distribute food to nationals.

Enanga denied allegations of torture: “He has not been poisoned or had his ribs broken like some people are saying. He is in good condition contrary to reports that he is dead.”

Kato’s health condition deteriorated at the beginning of this week when he suffered a stroke and rushed to Medipal Int. Hospital in Kololo where he has been hospitalized up to today.

Speaker Kadaga visited the pair in two different hospitals and was left disturbed by Zaake’s situation.

The speaker said: “I visited Hon. Francis Zaake and Hon. Kato Lubwama today at Lubaga Hospital and Medipal Hospital respectively.”

He regretted: “I’m saddened to hear about acts of torture that continue to be meted on some Ugandans; it’s sad that this was reportedly inflicted upon an MP.”

Kadaga assured: “I am a strong advocate against human rights abuses and this among other incidents, I intend to take up with relevant authorities.”

She asserted: “It’s however, reassuring to notice that both Zaake and Kato Lubwama are responding to treatment.”
