The High Court has on Monday finally granted on Monday, the distressed presidential contender Lt. Gen. Henry Tumukunde bail.

Justice Wilson Kwesiga who presided over the bail hearing reconsidered and directed that Gen. Tumukunde gets anon-cash bail of shillings 50 million, deposit his passport in court and that his sureties to each execute a non-cash bond of UGX. 50 million.

Tumukunde presented to the court three sureties including his wife, his brother Hannington Karuhanga and former minister and friend Mathew Rukikaire.

The judge also ordered that the said bail terms should be applied before the Magistrate court where Gen. Tumukunde is charged with offenses of unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition.

This comes after the embattled former security Minister filed a fresh application to the high court asking it to ease and relax on bail terms after he failed to secure army generals to stand for him as directed by the court.

On April 14, Justice Wilson Kwesiga dismissed his bail application on grounds that he needed to present at least two sureties, either at his rank of a Lieutenant General-Lt Gen or higher General.

The presidential contender had presented  Maj Gen Mugisha Muntu, the leader of Alliance for National Transformation party-ANT, Salaam Musumba, FDC vice-chairperson Eastern Uganda, his wife Stella Tumukunde and brother Hannington Karuhanga, as his sureties who were all discarded.

However, his lawyers led by Anthony Wameli and Geoffrey Turyamusiima filed an application asking High Court in Kampala to ease the conditions set for his bail and allow him to front other credible sureties.

While appearing before Buganda Road Magistrates Court on the 6th May 2020 via video conferencing and Tumukunde had complained about solitary confinement.

Tumukunde explained to the court presided over by City Hall Magistrate Valerian Tumuhimbise that this solitary confinement was affecting his psychic and physiological status.

He further told the court to consider his bail application since he has served this country diligently and is a senior citizen.

Tumuhimbise advised his lawyers to follow due process and get their client his bail in the capital offense considering he was denied at the High court.
