NRM Tuesday showed who is the boss in Parliament when they successfully had their motion to recognise the services of President Yoweri Museveni in fighting Covid-19 in the country.

Uganda has confirmed 122 Covid-19 cases without fatalities, leading to NRM MPs in the August to overwhelmingly ride behind Bonny Okello’s motion.

Okello, MP Kole North County, moved to present a motion for resolution of Parliament paying tribute to President Museveni, for his continuing exemplary and insightful leadership during the Covid-19 pandemic in Uganda.

Okello hailed: “The exemplary leadership of H.E the President has seen Uganda become a beacon of hope in the fight against #COVIDー19 and other deadly viruses. And has mitigated the social and economic effects of the virus on Uganda compared to other countries. Which have all reported far worse Covid-19 statistics, including infections and deaths compared to Uganda.”

Oboth Oboth seconded Okello’s motion. Oboth said that ‘the President deserves a big thank you’.

Veronica Bichetero, MP Kaberamaido County, also seconded the motion by  saying Museveni has become an admirable icon globally.

Efforts by Gilbert Olanyah to sneak in Speaker Rebecca Kadaga into the motion received strong opposition from NRM MPs who one after another outlined the President’s effort.

Olanyah sought for an amendment on the motion to include speaker whom he hailed for steering the house through the time Covid-19 times.

He was backed by Arua Municipality MP Kasiano Wadiri who told the house that the motion is not timely, equating it to ‘thanking a cook before he serves the food’.

Led by the government chief whip, Ruth Nankabirwa, MP after another took to the floor to praise the President’s achievements.

The voting left nothing to imagination as they overwhelming overcame Olanyah and Wadri.

This motion follows the motion by Ibrahim Ssemujju ‘to advise the President that he must use the official channels of communication when he wants to communicate to Parliament. We don’t expect a head of state to join a mob of those throwing mud at Parliament.’

Which saw Odonga Otto, Asuman Basilirwa and Gonzanga Ssewunga add their voices.

Odonga Otto hailed: “The Speaker has the highest potential to be the president of this country. So they are trying everything possible to undermine the her achievements. ”

Ssewungu Gonzaga said: “Let us fight this kind of situation. I was surprised that the @mofpedU  Minister @MatiaK5

was denying knowledge of the allocation of shs10 billion and yet he went ahead and said he had bought food for his constituency.”

Asuman Basalirwa summed it up: “At no time shall we surrender our power to the executive. Anybody denigrating the Speaker and Parliament and we follow that person, we are making a mistake. It was unfair for the President to make statements that brought disrepute to this House.”
