The Uganda People’s Defense Forces -UPDF has warned that it will not hesitate to shoot people caught crossing porous borders in the night.
Speaking at the Uganda Media Centre in Kampala, Lt. Col. Deo Akiiki, the UPDF deputy spokesperson says they have witnessed an escalating number of people sneaking into the country using the known porous border points or new ones they have created.
Akiiki says the UPDF has now beefed up security at these points and will shoot any person flouting the presidential orders in this manner.
Akiiki also warned thigh vendors to equally stay away from cross-border truck drivers as this poses a dangerous risk to those who have been in the country, self-isolating and staying home, to slow the spread of COVID-19.
He says this practice has been so common on the eastern border joining the northern border into South Sudan.
Akiiki says they have also quarantined three Ugandans at Kabahenda Isolation Centre in Isingiro district who entered the country via Tanzania.
This comes at a time when Uganda has confirmed 122 cases of COVID-19 after one person tested positive on Monday.
The new case is that of a Ugandan truck driver who arrived from Juba via Elegu.
His sample was part of 2,296 other samples that were tested today at the Uganda Virus Research Institute, Entebbe.
Uganda has so far confirmed over 10 Ugandan truck drivers who have entered the country from the neighboring countries.
Ministry of Health is now tracing the driver and all the people he has come into contact with.
