The 1st Division Spokesperson Maj. Bilal Yusuf Katamba has hailed Local Defense Unit officers-LDUs for greatly improving in acts of discipline from the time they were first deployed.
According to Katamba ,the level of restraint portrayed by LDUs is promising considering the number of complaints against them has also reduced.
Katamba says the UPDF is are optimistic of a more professional lot of LDU’s since they have now been placed under the guidance of Senior Non Commission officers to mentor them.
He was speaking on the sidelines at the Uganda People’s Defense Forces-UPDF 1st division court-martial where both LDU’s and UPDF soldiers were being convicted.

Among them was an LDU officer who was sentenced to three year’s imprisonment for shooting his colleague dead.
Four other LDUs and three UPDF soldiers also appeared before the same court on charges of desertion, failure to protect war material, and giving false information.
LDU’s have been a point of focus in Uganda for sometime ,shooting dead people and taking the law into their hands on several occasions.
Ugandans have also criticized the UPDF for handing over guns to LDUs without adequate training.
