The parliamentary commission has ordered all MPs to submit accountability for their share of the 10 billion offered to them not later than May 27.

This follows a meeting of the Parliamentary commission held on May 11 on way forward over the funds.

A cash deposit of the controversial 2o million was channeled to the accounts of legislators last month as facilitation for COVID-19 activities after parliament allocated itself a slice of the COVID -19 supplementary budget.

These stirred a national debate criticizing the legislators hence attracting disapproval and direction from the Executive through the President on how to channel the funds.

Addressing the nation on the 29th of April, Museveni said he’s heard that Ugandans are very angry with the MPs, saying he also disagreed with the move because not only is it bad planning but morally “reprehensible” for MPs to allocate themselves cash in a pandemic.

Now in a letter dated May 12, the Clerk to Parliament Jane Kibirige says it was resolved at the meeting that all legislators submit accountability for the money, not later than May 27 to the clerk to parliament.

It also includes MPs who used up the money by the 5th of May should submit accountability.

However, those that have not yet spent the money to date have been directed to hand it over to their District task force through the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO).

The letter further states that MPs representing Special Interest Group should pay the money to the National Task-force.

President Yoweri Museveni also wrote to parliament noting that it undermined the executive by diverting the 10 billion Shillings from the supplementary budget which was initially looking at key sectors in the COVID-19 permit.

The president called for a thorough audit of the process, except for those who have handed the money to the district task force or returned it.
