The lanky shotstopper started his career as a striker at Sharing Youth Center, then Nsambya Fc before moving to Sports Club Villa replacing Posnet Omony who had gone on a professional stint in SouthAfrica.

He has starred for sides like; Sports Club Villa, St. George, Supersport, Mpumalanga Black Aces, Bidvest Wits, Mamelodi Sundowns.

Nicknamed ‘Onyiso’, Onyango scooped the 2016 African based best footballer of the year award and was also chosen as the best goalkeeper of the year 2016 agter guiding Mamelodi Sundowns to the CAF Africa club champions league crown.

With the National side, Onyango did bis Cranes debut on 18th June 2005 in a world cup qualifier against Cape Verde, being capped 75 times and on April 2017 took over the Cranes armband from Geoffrey Massa.
