Ministry of Health has on Monday announced another 10 new infections of COVID 19 bringing the total number of confirmed cases in Uganda to 222.

All 10 cases are Ugandan nationals who entered the country on Tuesday.

Also a total of over 1500 people are under quarantine at 150 sites in the country in the Northern part of Uganda.

The new cases are from 1,189 samples picked from both the community and different points of entry.

153 samples were picked from the community while 1,037 were from points of entry.

Nine of them are truck drivers who entered the country from different points of entry while one case is of a contact to a truck driver.

The health ministry says the contact was already under quarantine by the time samples were taken for testing.

Meanwhile 30 positive truck drivers were sent to their countries of origin.

The number of truck drivers who have been returned stands at over 250.

Scientists have cautioned that it is too early to rule out community transmission of COVID in Uganda.

The health ministry has tested over 18,400 people within different communities as part of the Rapid Community Assessment that was targeting 23,000 Ugandans.

Since 31 December 2019 and as of 25 May 2020, 5 371 700 cases of COVID-19  have been reported, including 344 815 deaths.

In Africa,112 009 infections have been confirmed with five countries reporting most cases are South Africa (22 583), Egypt (17 265), Algeria (8 306), Nigeria (7 839), and Morocco (7 433).
