The two legislators who spent a night in the bedbug-infested cells of CPS Gulu for instigating a protest over Elegu border town on Monday have been charged with inciting violence and negligent acts likely to cause the spread of infectious diseases.

The legislatures including the candid Aruu County MP, Odonga Otto, and the Kilak county MP, Gilbert Olanya were picked up by police and whisked off to CPS Gulu after gathering a mob of youth and Boda Boda riders to stage a protest.

The unruly crowd reportedly pitched camp at the Cereleno market in Pece division and started yelling with placards that the government shuts down the Elegu entry point and the town for two weeks.

They also protested against Gulu District COVID -19 Taskforce and the cargo truck drivers.

Also arrested was Kelly Komakech, the Chairman of Pece Division and Stella Kijange, a women’s rights activist.

Jimmy Patrick Okema, the Aswa River Region Police Spokesperson says that the legislators attracted the crowd hence defying the presidential directive on social distancing and inciting violence.

He says case files of the four suspects have been taken to the Resident Senior State Attorney –RSSA for advice.

Their lawyers Tonny Kitara and Conrad Oroya Obol say they are making arrangements to secure their bond.
