For those who thought that the general elections slated for 2021 were out of the picture, here is news for you! the Electoral Commission (EC) has on Tuesday, June 16, 2020, released a fresh roadmap in anticipation of the general elections slated for 2021.

The commission indicates that campaigns for all aspirants will be held using digital platforms like social media, Radio, TVs among others.

Justice Simon Byabakama the EC chairperson says campaigns start in September 2020 and proceed till January 2021.

Meanwhile, the polling period for all aspirants including local government, parliamentary and presidential will happen between 10th January and 10th February 2021.

Byabakama says the exact dates will be set and communicated after nominations take place.

Byabakama reveals that between 28th September 2020- 8th January 2020, media campaigns will commence for Local Government aspirants, this will be followed by Parliamentary campaigns on 20th October 2020 -8th January 2021 while Presidential campaigns will happen on 10th November 2020 -8th January 2021.

The electoral commission has also issued varying deadlines for the establishment of academic papers by aspiring candidates to include 7 July – Local Government, 11 August -parliamentary, and 1 September for presidential aspirants.

Also, the deadline for resignation by public servants aspiring to contest for Parliamentary Elections is 12 July 2020, Local Government Councils Elections – 7th August and Presidential Elections -31st October 2020

He says the campaigns will be carried out using scientific guidelines and no mass gatherings, to mitigate the spread of the COVID -19.

He explains that all aspirants and their team of supporters must strictly follow the guidelines on public meetings as issued by the Ministry of Health.
