If all goes as planned, Uganda will see a segmented re-opening of academic and tertiary institutions this year after a cabinet decision was made to that effect.
During a protracted cabinet meeting held on Monday, the cabinet decided to start with setting free higher institutions of learning like universities and tertiary institutions.
The state minister for higher education John Muyingo says precedence will be given to 100 tertiary institutions and 50 universities across the country.
Muyingo explains that the above institutions attract a lesser population of learners and have larger accommodations as compared to Primary and Secondary schools which are in line with the social distancing guidelines.
As for candidate classes resuming, the Minister says that has been halted indefinitely because it affects the entire system of class to class promotion procedure for both Primary and secondary schools.
He, however, said the Ministry of education is exploring mass media learning as an option for continued learning.
Under this, he explains that the government is in the process of procuring 137,466 solar-powered Television sets and 10 million Radio to cover the 68,000 villages in Uganda at a cost of sh 380bn.
Each household will be given a radio set free of charge from the government.
