Traders under their umbrella body of the Kampala City Traders Association -KACITA, have appealed to KCCA and the relevant authorities in the government to have arcades reopen to free the city center from congestion.

The traders fronted by Isa Sekitto, the spokesperson of the association claim that failure to resume arcades has led to a section of desperate traders instigating operations on the streets hence breaking the guidelines on social distancing.

Sekitto, says there is almost no difference in downtown Kampala as most traders have resolved to pack themselves together in malls hence congestion.

Two weeks ago, the Trade minister Amelia Kyambadde held a meeting with traders and landlords in which a proposal was raised to have arcades reopen but with a minimal of three attendants.

However, this seems not to have yielded any fruit regardless of a commitment made by to take the proposal to parliament for consideration.

Sekitto however proposes that the government reopen arcaders under strict guidelines and only halts operations of shop attendants that refuse to practice standard operating procedures-SOPs.
