The UPDF soldier responsible for firing live bullets at a church leader in Kasese has finally earned himself 35years of jail time at Mubuku government prison.

A division Court Martial sitting in Karusandara sub-county, Kasese District, convicted Abraham Lokwap, 23 on Tuesday evening.

The  Martial court also sentenced  Lt. Talent Akampurira who commanded the operation to 12-months. The accused pleaded guilty to the charge of murder.

Lokwap attached to the 6th Mountain Brigade Battalion in Hima, opened fire on Benon Musiimenta, a Lay Reader at the Anglican Kogore Church of Uganda under the South Rwenzori Diocese on Wednesday last week killing him on spot.

The army court chaired by Lt. Col. Felix Nyeko said that all the evidence produced before the court-martial sittings including witness accounts by the wife and Doctor Jonathan Kateremwa who did Nsimenta’s postmortem proved the crime beyond a reasonable doubt.

The deceased was killed in the company of his wife Allen Musimenta, at Karungibati, along the Hima- Kasese road while traveling on a motorcycle to their farm.

The wife recounted how they were stopped by a team of UPDF personnel for reportedly defying curfew but without further explanation, the soldier fired a bullet at her husband in the neck.

Lokwap will be taken to Makindye military barracks while Lt. Akampurira will serve his sentence from Mubuku government prison.
