Controversial Kampala Woman Mp contender Dr. Stella Nyanzi teamed up with Heartsounds Uganda a local NGO focused on mental health advocacy cast doubts on the circumstances leading to the death of Emmanuel Tegu.

Tegu , a 3rd-year veterinary student at Makerere University was reportedly clobbered by a gang of persons inside the University at night on June 28 on his way to church.

Fred Enanga the police mouthpiece says police have CCTV footage showing how the deceased was violent towards police patrol team by pelting stones after he was found half-naked at Makerere University.

Enanga says they suspect his mental health condition -bipolar could have escalated his reaction to police.

Enanga says Tegu started chasing the officers while throwing stones at them as he headed towards St, Agustine church alerting a mob within that pounced on him beating him into a comma. The mob allegedly mistook him for a thief.

The police came to his rescue and rushed him to hospital but he was pronounced dead on the 3rd of July at Mulago Hospital where he had been admitted.

However, Dr. Nyanzi says police’s investigations contradict the way  Tegu was brutally tortured before his death adding that Police doesn’t have to expose the mental state of a patient.

According to the narrative from the relatives to the deceased, while in hospital, Tegu revealed to them how he was beaten by security personnel on suspicion of theft.

On Tuesday , the Vice-chancellor, Makerere University Prof Barnabas Nawangwe tasked police to speed up investigations into Tegu’s death.

Nawangwe said investigations into his sudden death should be quickened so that justice prevails.

13 people have since been arrested over the same.
