President Yoweri Museveni has disclosed that the government is set to distribute radio sets to 9 million families in Uganda for study purposes.

Museveni made the revelation after postponing his position on reopening during a COVID-19 address to ease the lockdown on Tuesday night.

President Museveni indicated that a big decision in line with reopening or declaring a dead year on schools will be taken and communicated before September this year.

He argued that making a rash decision now is not ideal because a possible solution could arise anytime like getting a vaccine or cure to the deadly virus.

The president further stated that he held a meeting on Tuesday afternoon with the Ministers for Finance and Education which concluded with funds been made available to buy the Radios and commence the distribution of radios for learners.

Museveni said for now the best option available for learners is to continue with virtual distance learning which is currently ongoing on radios and television.

The government has been planning to provide at least 9 million radio sets to every household and 137,466 solar-powered television sets to villages across the country.

A grant of 55.8 billion Shillings from the Global Partnership in Education-GPE to aid in the implementation of the said distance learning program.

The academic year was prematurely cut short on March 18, 2020, to mitigate the spread of COVID-19 pandemic.
