Police in Jinja city on Thursday rescued a distressed 78-year-old man who traveled from western Uganda to the famous Nile bridge to kill himself.

Charles Kakiriho, a resident of Njerika cell in Isingiro district traveled all the way to Jinja to end his life because his wife had refused to serve him her beans for 1 year.

Clad in a brown striped shirt and a black trouser, stood at the pedestrian walkway of the bridge for close to 30 minutes with a leaflet with his personal details.

His intentions were however blocked by Security personnel at the bridge after noticing his suspicious behavior and he was later taken to Nalufenya police station.

Kakiriho confessed to attempting suicide not only because he was denied sex but also that he felt rejected and depressed by villagers who kept laughing for failing to manage his marriage.

“This problem has depressed me because everyone is making fun of me, calling me a weak man who cannot control the general welfare of his homestead,” He said.

Abbey Ngako, the Kiira region police spokesperson says that because the victim had already thrown his phone in the river, they are using other communication platforms to reunite him with his family members.
